THE ARCHEOLOGICAL MUSEUM

The Archaeological Museum in Byala is one of the youngest museums not just in the Varna region, but in whole Bulgaria. It was founded in 2012 with the goal of preserving and protecting the finds discovered during archaeological excavations at St. Anthanasius Cape. The idea for the museum was born in 2009 when the first drilling studies began. Two years later, the project for the restoration, conservation, and socialization of the late antique fortress on St. Anthanasius Cape was completed.

Visitors can now see both the restored fortress and the materials discovered and stored in the Archaeological Museum in Byala.

The exhibition hall is in the heart of the town. It was provided by the municipal administration provided it in order to preserve, protect, and display the material cultural and historical finds discovered during the archaeological excavations on St. Anthanasius Cape. The museum’s exhibits were found entirely on the territory of the municipality of Byala. The materials are spread out across several halls. Visitors can learn interesting facts about the life of the people who lived in the fortress as well as see many valuable antiquity finds. The museum also displays artifacts discovered during underwater archeological excavations in the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s. Many amphorae, anchors, a ceramic dining table, and other artifacts were discovered. Many coins discovered on St. Anthanasius Cape are displayed here, demonstrating that trade was very developed during this time period. Visitors to the museum can see various objects from the lives of the people who once lived on the territory of St. Anthanasius Cape. Some examples of common medical instruments are also exhibited here. The bronze lamp discovered in the town of Byala is noteworthy. There are only two of these lamps in the world; the other was discovered in modern-day Syria and is now housed in New York’s largest museum, the Metropolitan.
