THE WHITE CLIFFS

White Cliffs is a popular tourist attraction located in the northern part of the picturesque Byala resort area, approximately 60 kilometers from the city of Varna. It represents a continuous geological profile of limestone and is one of the few places on the planet that bear witness to a massive cosmic cataclysm 65 million years ago. There are only a few such locations in the world, and they are not accessible. When the dinosaurs were the sovereign lords of the Earth (the Cretaceous-Tertiary period), a massive meteorite landed near Mexico, with the consequences reaching as far as the territory of today’s Byala, which is 10,000 km away from the collision. This natural phenomenon was discovered by the Australian geologist Anton Preisinger

The White Cliffs are essentially a natural geological museum, tracing different periods of the earth’s crust. Aside from the rocks, an ancient system of fortifications from the end of the 7th century has been preserved on the shore. The ruins of a Roman fortress can be found not far from the village.

Byala Municipality has taken the initiative to preserve this one-of-a-kind natural landmark. Since 2001, this area has been designated as a nature preserve. A reserve exhibition and information stand is located near the town’s central square, where visitors can learn more about the origins of the White Cliffs. No less consideration is given to the role that rocks play in the formation of the earth’s crust throughout history.
